Classical French Restaurants in Bordeaux

If you are looking for restaurants that will take you back in time and place, look no further than these classic Bordeaux restaurants serving the same style French cuisine one might have found 70 years ago.

Au Bistro will remind you of many classic Parisian bistros, which are actually rather rare in Bordeaux. It is located near the covered market ‘Marche des Capucins’ and is a rather lively space! They have many of the classic dishes we talk about, steak frites, pigeon, blood sausage (boudin noir), local duck from the Landes region, and rabbit / +33 (0)6 63 54 21 14 / 61 Place des Capucins, 33000 Bordeaux / http://www.aubistrot.fr/

La Tupina – Possibly the most authentic location in town, serving classic dishes like ‘lamproie** Bordelaise‘, Chef Franck Audu is keeping SW French cuisine alive and accessible in La Tupina. This is an institution in Bordeaux, first opening in 1968 / 6 Rue de la Porte de la Monnie, 33800 Bordeaux / +33 (0)5 56 91 56 37 https://latupina.com/

Le Chapon Fin – More upscale that the other two, this is a great location for a lunch with the girlfriends or dinner with the boss. While the origins of the restaurant are 19th century, the charming dining room was re-designed in 1900 and offers a unique aesthetic. The modern menu, with plenty of fresh fish in rich jus and specialty meats like sweetbreads and foie gras, will have something to delight any pallet…just like the wine list / 5 Rue Montesquieu, 33000 Bordeaux / +33 (0)5 56 79 10 10 / https://www.chapon-fin.com/

Les Noailles – Will remind you of a classical Paris bistro, but in Bordeaux. Serving up those French classics like oeuf mimosa, choucroute, sole meuniere, and the Bordeaux classic entrecote a la Bordelaise* since 1932! Good wine list as well. Service is fast and it’s good for families or groups / 12 Allees de Tourny, 33000 Bordeaux / +33 (0)5 56 81 94 45 / http://lenoailles.fr/

*a la Bordelaise traditionally means with shallots, red wine sauce and it can be found on meat, fish…almost anything.

**lamproie (lamprey eel) is a migratory fish found in France, locally cooked in red wine and it’s own juices. Prized by nobility and eaten for centuries, it is a dish which takes you back in time. The fishing season is December-April and we offer tours if you would like to meet these animals in person.
