You would be remiss to not book a table at Aga if you are anywhere near Cadillac in SE Gironde. This is a small, chef-owned restaurant located near the historic Clock Tower (Vernihaut), close to the covered market. There are tables outdoors to enjoy the charming view in the summer months. The talented Chef is Alexandre Goniak and charming Front of House is Gerie Jenner. Both have travelled and lived overseas extensively, eventually choosing Cadillac to settle down.
There is a lunch menu and two options for the evening : four courses at 50 EURO and six courses at 60 EURO. We opted for the four courses. With two cocktails and a glass of wine and our total came to 125 EURO (so very reasonable for a dinner locally). Their plates are based on seasonal and regional ingredients, so if you are a locavore you will be very happy!
OUR DINNER AT AGA
We had amuse buche of beetroot tarte and smoked trout, followed by a pita filled with beans and spices (not shown). The starter was probably my favourite and the most creative, a Landes asparagus and cockle dish with mustard seeds and so perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned, and uniquely creative.
The main was a classic seared duck breast with a jus, miso mushroom cap, and salsify with a hazelnut crust (also unique and delicious). Fresh salsify is such a pain to work with but so delicious, something I would not have at home so really enjoyable.
For dessert, the first strawberries of the season and tarragon were the stars. Like the asparagus and cockle starter, they were served in two different forms. One was a light cookie with tarragon cream, slices of strawberry, fresh tarragon, and meringue disks. Texturally very satisfying, as well as delectable. The other was a mousse on top of diced strawberries with a tarragon ice cream inside, also delicious but I was actually rather cold indoors so could have used one warm dessert to warm us up!
Everything was delicious at Restaurant Aga and I am always so happy to see such talent and creativity locally. Please be sure to book a table and support this talented team in Cadillac!
