If you’re looking for a pretty location to go with kids to visit a family owned goat farm, see historic castles, centuries old ruins, and meet a confiture artisan métier…look no further than Prechac, in Gironde.
HOW TO GET THERE : Located about 45 minutes from Bordeaux by car (you’ll need one to get around unless you’re comfortable cycling on roads), Prechac is one of those sleepy French countryside towns steeped in history. The closest train station is Langon.
WHAT TO SEE : The biggest attraction is the Chateau de Cazeneuve, the ancient familial home of Henri IV and Queen Margot. Tours of the interior are offered in the afternoons in French, but the grounds are open most of the day and are the perfect place for a picnic or stroll. One of our favorite spots is the queens grotto, where she would meet her lovers. Goat cheese and soap makers, Vincent Callens et Emilie Daurian, at La Ferme du Pre-chic offer visits at their farm to meet the animals, and if you are there at the right time, to see the milking process. Spring-Autumn months only, book in advance. Sandrine Gondolo is not only a really interesting person, but makes some of the most amazing jams and jellies you’ll ever taste. She has achieved the coveted ‘maître artisan‘ in her métier, the highest honor in a trade. If you live here, you have probably tried her products before but it’s doubtful you have seen the entire range of her talents! The eerie ruins of 12th century, built during the time of Clement V, Chateau de la Trave are located next to the kayak dropping point on the Ciron river in Prechac.
